Online platforms can be positive spaces
When young people are struggling with feelings of worry or confusion, many find that the internet and online platforms can be a source of support. These online spaces can enable them to chat with other people who may be experiencing the same thing and access information to help them better understand how they’re feeling or how they can take steps to feel better.
A young person’s recovery can also be supported by online platforms, as they can be useful resources to enable young people to find supportive advice for those who are experiencing bad mental health or an eating disorder. This positive content can come in different forms, but they might include:
- Videos (vlogs) where other people share their own recovery progress, advice and tips
- Inspirational memes and quotes
- Support groups
Harmful online content
The internet can also provide young people with opportunities to see graphic and upsetting content which could cause them harm, including pro-eating disorder, pro-suicide and pro-self-harm content.
This kind of content can be viewed on most online platforms such as; social media, video sharing platforms, internet browsers, online forums., message boards, messaging groups and messaging platforms. These types of content can take many forms including; eating disorder content, pro-suicide and self-harm content and harmful content linked to mental health conditions.
