LGBTQIA+
LGBTQIA+ stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer, Intersex, Asexual, Plus; used to refer to the diverse community of sexuality and gender. These terms are used to describe an individuals sexual preference and gender identity. The LGBTQIA+ community has been built up throughout history, where individuals have expressed their sexuality and gender outside of societies heterosexual and cisgender societies.
This section of the site has been put together by members of the LGBTQIA+ community, as well as supportive allies, to educate and inform those questioning their sexuality or gender – as well as those who just want to support the community.
Coming out and being open about your sexuality/gender can be a very scary process. We live in an extremely heteronormative society – the strong stereotype that everything is based around heterosexuality, with lack of consideration for those who may identify otherwise. Although there is more representation for LGBTQIA+ people in modern media, there is still a lack of understanding and discussion throughout the world around expression of sexuality and gender.
Educating the people around us so that they have awareness of the community is a great way to help them understand how you are feeling about your own sexuality and gender. However, it is also important to educate yourself. Learning about identities and expression can help you to understand your own thoughts and feelings, as well as other people within the community.
